What Sets Our Family-Grown Flour Apart

  • 40+ years milling and shipping from Fort Benton, Montana
  • Grain from 150+ family-owned farms you can actually trace
  • Sole U.S. agent for heirloom KAMUT® brand grain

Most flour shows up in a bag with no story behind it. Ours comes with names, farms, and four decades of relationships you can actually trace. Here is who grows your grain, where it comes from, and why that still matters every time you bake.

Where It All Starts: Fort Benton, Montana

Montana Flour & Grain is rooted in Fort Benton, often called the birthplace of Montana and the heart of the state’s wheat country. The high plains here — cold winters, dry summers, and wide temperature swings — happen to be some of the best wheat-growing conditions on the continent. That climate is the first reason our flour bakes the way it does, long before any milling happens.

For more than 40 years, we have shipped certified-organic and conventional flour and whole-grain products from this one spot to kitchens and food makers around the world. We are not a label on someone else’s grain. We are a working part of the community that grows it.

Have a question about where your grain is grown? We are happy to talk you through it.

Not One Farm — More Than 150 Family Farms

When people picture a flour company, they often imagine one big field. The reality is better. Our grain is grown by more than 150 family-owned and operated farms across Montana, neighboring states, and Canada. Some of these families have farmed the same ground for generations.

That network is not just a supply line — it is a relationship. Working directly with growers gives us first-hand knowledge of crop conditions every season and a steady supply of high-quality grain. It also means the farmers we buy from, and the customers we sell to, are real links in the same chain. We think that connection is worth protecting.

Why Buying Grower-Direct Changes the Flour

Because we know the farms, we know the grain. We can match the right wheat to the right job — higher-protein spring wheat for big, airy yeasted loaves, or lower-protein winter wheat that many sourdough bakers prefer. That kind of sorting is only possible when you actually know who grew what.

The KAMUT® Legacy: A 4,000-Year-Old Grain With a Montana Home

Here is something most flour companies can never say: Montana Flour & Grain is the sole U.S. agent for KAMUT® brand grain, an heirloom spring wheat with ancient origins. We provide grower support and work to keep a consistent supply of this unique “ancient” wheat, which bakers prize for its rich, buttery flavor and golden color.

Being the U.S. home for KAMUT is not a marketing line — it is decades of work building trust with the farmers who grow it and the bakers who depend on it. It is the clearest example of what we do best: take care of a special grain from the field all the way to your kitchen.

Quality You Can Stand Behind: 35 Years of Organic Certification

Trust is easy to claim and hard to earn. We have backed ours up the slow way. Our organic certification is 35 years strong and counting, and all of our products are processed in a GFSI-certified grain-handling facility — a globally recognized food-safety standard. Products labeled organic are certified under the USDA National Organic Program, and we are proud members of the Montana Organic Association and the Whole Grains Council.

We have built our reputation serving both small home bakers and large food manufacturers, with many of our organic grains sold around the world. The standards do not change based on order size.

Want to know how a specific product is certified? Just ask — we will give you a straight answer.

What This Means for You as a Baker

You do not need to memorize our farm list to benefit from it. Here is how to put our sourcing to work in your own kitchen:

  • Match wheat to your bake. Choose high-protein hard red wheat for yeasted breads, and consider winter wheat or our whole-grain KAMUT® flour for distinctive flavor.
  • Buy whole grain when freshness matters most. Whole kernels (berries) store longer than flour and let you mill at home for the freshest possible result. Remember: if the word “flour” is not in the product title, it is grain, not flour.
  • Ask before you buy in bulk. We pack everything from small mail-order bags to 50- and 60-lb. paper bags up to 2,000-lb. bulk totes, so you can order at the scale that fits.
  • Set up a standing order. Many regular customers have us ship the same amount every month, so they never run out.
